The Golden Globes are generally known as the casual low-key sister of the awards season circuit. It’s relaxed, it’s very social and it’s one of few events where TV and movie stars mingle and air kiss.
But this year the carpet was packed with purpose. In the form of LBDs. Not little black dresses but LOUD black dresses. Because these women had something to say and we should all most definitely be listening up.
The #TimesUp movement was visually represented in a sea of black all over the red carpet when industry men and women donned their darkest in protest against sexual harassment, gender inequality and in support of the #MeToo movement.
So instead of simply showing you beautiful couture, which there was, I thought it important to hear why these women decided to wear black and add their voices to this cause.
“Time is up on the imbalance of power in our society … there’s a real sense of celebration on the red carpet … the reason we didn’t just stay home is that we shouldn’t have to sit out the night, or our seat at the table because of bad behavior that wasn’t ours. We are looking out for anybody who feels marginalized, whether you are a woman or a man, or because of your sexual orientation … that’s why we formed a legal-defense fund. We are committed to making change not just in our industry but in every industry.” – Interview with NBC
“#TIMESUPon abuse, harassment, and the imbalance of power. Not just in Hollywood, but every industry! We stand together. Today, join us: Wear Black!” – on Instagram
“What I love about it is that it’s not just wearing black to wear black. I keep saying that it is going to feel like a big funeral. But in a good way it just feels like the death of old Hollywood … there’s a new resolve, and it feels like even with the action points that we have with the legal-defense fund, and making agencies employ more women in position of power, it feels like this can actually get done. So it’s more than just a color. It’s more than just wearing black. We’re about that action.” – Interview with In Style
“I stand with women across every industry to say#TIMESUPon abuse, harassment, marginalization and underrepresentation.” – on Twitter
“Times up on a lot of things.” – Interview with Entertainment Tonight
“May we teach our children that speaking out without the fear of retribution is our cultures new North Star.” – Acceptance Speech at the Golden Globes
