When I first heard about the Skip Fashion Exchange, before I was asked to actually take part in it, I thought to myself… why hadn’t someone thought of this before?! For decades, moms with kids who grazed their knees and bled all over their clothes were the only people that washing powder brands spoke to. But think about it. You wash your clothes, right? You love fashion, yes? Then you’re invested in what you purchase and how you care for it.
When I’ve bought something I love the first thing I do is check the care label. How do I look after this item so that I can slay in it repeatedly? Haha.
Apart from the angle that Skip have taken, when they included myself, Amanda du Pont and Palesa Mahlaba of Simply Palesa, we’re also all about the movement of sustainable fashion. How do we lessen the impact that the industry has on the environment and recycle where and when we can? Through initiatives such as the Skip Fashion Exchange.
We wore some phenomenal local designers including Lukhanyo Mdingi, Rich Mnisi, Merwe Mode and Jenevieve Lyons. Gabbi Kannemeyer was our incredible stylist. I felt like Gigi Hadid on set!
So, how does it work?
Basically it’s shopping without spending any money! Too good to be true, right? Not really…
We all own those items we used to love and that are still in great shape but just don’t wear anymore for one reason or another. And since we’ve got these items lying around why not do an exchange?
So this weekend at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg it’s a process of 4 easy steps: (here are some pics from the Cape Town leg of the exchange at Tygervalley!)
Gather up the high street, premium or luxury clothing items in your closet that you no longer wear.
Take your clothing and accessories to the Skip Fashion Exchange at Tygervalley. Each garment will be evaluated and categorised as either ‘high street’, ‘premium’ or ‘luxury’. You’ll then receive the relevant tokens to use as store credit at the Exchange.
Browse the Skip Fashion Exchange before swapping your tokens for a new favourite wardrobe item.
This is why sustainable fashion is important to me.
Myself, Amanda and Palesa are all contributing items to the exchange so you may even find something from the red carpet! I’ll be exchanging this AMAZING sequin and beaded embellished cape playsuit which I wore to the E! Africa Red Carpet launch earlier this year. Literally worn ONCE (ok twice if you count my New Year’s styled shoot I did for Fossil Watches) but still brand new and is definitely a show stopper.
