The first Monday in May is upon us and fashionistas alike will know that this means the Met Gala is quite literally around the corner. I figured I would recap on my most unforgettable Met Gala moments from years gone by. Note the word, unforgettable. Not best or worst. Simply those fashion moments that are etched into Met Ball history!
At only the 2nd ever Met Gala the original single named singer, Cher, wore the original see-through dress. Step aside Kim Kardashian and Bey, Cher did it first in custom Bob Mackie.
Iman was a metallic goddess in 1981. Designer unknown. Although Calvin Klein was her date (left) so she may have donned some CK that night.
That time at the Met Ball in 1981 when Diana Ross wore ALL the ruffles and look amazing doing so.
One of the original supers, Naomi Campbell, wore this incredible gown in 1995.
She then took one of the most iconic images in Met Gala history with fellow 90s OGs Christy Turlington and Kate Moss.
Princess Diana cemented herself as a fashion icon in this blue Dior number. This dress is circa 1996 when Galliano was at the helm of Dior’s creative team.
Mellow yellow but actually fiery hot. Scarlett Johansson in Calvin Klein in 2004.
The Met Gala and Sarah Jessica Parker go hand in hand like bob haircuts and Anna Wintour. Here she donned Alexander McQueen, with him as her date nogal, in 2006.
Here is a picture of Marc Jacobs on the Met Gala red carpet in 2012. He dresses some of the best dressed celebs in the world. Let that sink in a little.
Whether you love it or hate it, Miley Cyrus’ Marc Jacobs mesh gown was perfectly matched to the 2013 punk couture theme.
Another appearance in 2013 by one of our faves, SJP, had us in awe of the headdress she wore to accompany this gown by Giles Deacon.
In 2014 Erykah Badu did Pharrell before Pharrell did Pharrell.
Prada was the order of the day for Lupita Nyong’o’s first Monday in May back in 2014.
It’s rumoured that Beyonce was late for the 2015 Met Ball because she was busy trying to get this ponytail right. Well, she did. And she stunned in Givenchy.
Giles to Solange in 2015: “Hey Solange! Do you want to dress like a futuristic fortune cookie to at the Met Gala?” Solange: “Sure!” And the rest as they say is history.
Then there was that time in 2015 where Cara Delevingne didn’t only use clothes to make a fashion statement but donned body art in a statement all on it’s own. Genius.
In another meme worthy moment Sarah Jessica Parker was truly unforgettable in 2015 in this Philip Treacy Custom headdress.
Rihanna OWNED 2016. End of story. Full stop. She wore Guo Pei.
Some called it a condom, some called it latex art. Either way this Givenchy that Beyonce wore in 2016 was spoken of. A lot.
Remember that time in 2016 when Kim and Kanye were REALLY into the Met Gala theme? Yeah, that. They donned Balmain from head to toe and side to side.
One thing you can never call Madonna is boring. Especially when she wears Givenchy. Or barely wears Givenchy in 2016.
The Olsen Twins deserve an honorary mention for simply being, well, themselves. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Here’s hoping that 2017 will add more to this unforgettable list!
