As much as I love wearing heels if you pushed me to choose between that and flats I would definitely choose the latter! I love fashion but I love it even more when it’s comfortable and feels effortless. Let’s be honest… if something is uncomfortable you end up not wearing it!
Which is why I love (and have embraced) the Sports Luxe trend. Now, this isn’t something new. Since around 2014 we saw a resurgence of sport inspired fashion wear thanks to designers such as Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham. Who would have ever thought that the Queen of Chic (who generally wouldn’t be caught dead in flats) would close one of her New York Fashion Week shows in a pair of baggy trousers and Adidas trainers!
I often wear Sports Luxe clothing and decided to shop through some items at TALLY WEiJL in Mall of Africa to create a new winter look. Though casual-looking and cozy to wear, sportswear-inspired outfits are hardly meant for the gym. They can still be chic, fashionable and C L A S S I C 😉
Let’s start off with the jersey knit dress. The fabric and texture screams “sporty vibing” and the maxi length is perfect for warm Autumn or Winter days. It’s relaxed, it’s casual, it’s cool. Jersey knit fabrics, and jerseys in general, are a staple when putting together a look of this nature.
A bomber, ski jacket or varsity letter romper are all sport inspired outerwear examples that can transform any look into a Sports Luxe look. I chose this TALLY WEiJL ski jacket, oversized and incredibly warm, to layer over a sleek and skintight maxi. Don’t match bulky with bulky. Another way to wear this particular jacket would be with a pair of tight leggings. The only time it’s acceptable to wear leggings as pants 😉
The Sports Luxe trend is generally characterised by neutral tones of greys, blacks, whites and navys. This has, however, evolved with brands such as Burberry Prorsum, DKNY and Dior introducing colour block sneakers in bright and bold hues during their SS collections.
Morag Steyn, makeup artist genius, used this Urban Decay Vice lippe in Pandemonium to add a dramatic and dark pop of colour. We also got a little dramatic in the lash department with Kardashian Beauty’s Scintillate lashes. Go big or go home as they say!
When shopping this trend, search for cutouts and lines that show some sort of resemblance to sports wear. These details create strong shapes and mirror functional active wear like a racer back.
All hail the humble sneaker! A staple for any Sports Luxe addict. Here, we paired this casual cool TALLY WEiJL maxi dress with a pair of Feiyue Fe Lo Classic White Canvas sneakers. You can’t go wrong with a good old white takkie 🙂
Sports Luxe has been around before and isn’t going away any time soon. It’s easy to execute and can also be adapted to suit your personality. Tennis rackets are optional 😉
