GARDEN ROUTE WEDDING: Bohemian Bride Marries Her Beau

When Parooz fashion business owner, Roxy Athanasopoulos set about planning her wedding there was no doubt it was set to be a day made in bohemian fairy tale heaven!

WEDDING SNAPSHOT:

Roxy B: Why did you decide on the venue you chose?

Roxy A: Dimitri and I spend a lot of time on the Garden Route in the Western Cape. He also proposed to me in a little town called Sedgefield, so it was a no brainer to get married on the same coast line.

We didn’t want to get married in a wedding factory but rather somewhere that felt organic, and so when looking for venues our number 1 priority was to get married somewhere alternative that wasn’t your every day wedding venue. We wanted a semi outdoor wedding so that our ceremony could be in nature as well as a beautiful place that represented us as a couple.

We visited different farms, wine farms, and beaches but when seeing Forest Hall we instantly fell in love with it and nothing else compared. It was one of the most beautiful and magical places we had ever been to and it was an absolute honour to be able to have our special day there.

Roxy B: What look and feel were you going for with your dcor and overall mood of the wedding?

Roxy A: We wanted it to be romantic and beautiful, a true fairy tale with a modern twist. It was extremely important to us that it also had fun, down to earth and light-hearted elements. We didn’t want it to be pretentious in any way.

Roxy B: What flowers did you use?

Roxy A: We used a range of different flowers and plants, from king proteas and succulents to peonies, lisianthus, roses, sweet peas and more.

Roxy B: Are there any other special decor elements you used/created?

Roxy A: We used raw light bulbs to add a modern twist to our already romantic setting. We used hanging baskets filled with greenery and flowers and had long raw wooden tables with modern perspex tiffany chairs.

There were also hundreds of candles and curtain fairy lights to add to our modern romance theme.

For our guests we had raw silk scarves and custom made ginger bread man mini tequilas with hand written individual notes for each person from Dimitri and I.

Roxy B: Tell us about picking out your dress? What did you wear and what inspired it?

Roxy A: I got my dress made by the incredible Vesselina Pentcheva. Just like our wedding theme I wanted my dress to be romantic with a modern twist. We used imported Spanish 3D lace on top of a heart shaped polka dot mesh that we found. I took inspiration from dresses I found on pinterest but obviously changed it and made it my own. It took about 9 months to make my dress and my weekly fittings with Vesselina were without a doubt one of my favorite part of getting married.

Roxy B: How did you get ideas for your wedding? Did you have a coordinator or was Pinterest your best friend?

Roxy A: Pinterest was definitely our best friend as well as a lot of brain storming with friends & family.

Roxy B: Tell us about your bridesmaids/groomsmen’s outfits?

Roxy A: Originally I wanted to have my bridesmaid dresses made so each of them could wear a dress that suited their individual body & style. This became quite challenging as a few of my bridesmaids lived abroad or in a different city to me in SA. Once I decided to buy the dresses and after searching high and low, I found beautiful flowing dresses with sequin tops that looked good on all of their shapes.

We found matching flower girl dresses, so everyone looked perfect on the day.

Our groomsmen wore classic navy chinos, white shirts, brown shoes & belts. We wanted them to have a classic yet smart-casual look. They were all so handsome!

Roxy B: How did you pick your photographer and/or videographer? Was there a particular style you were looking for?

Roxy A: We did not want any cheesy wedding pictures and so wanted a photographer that took very natural, candid pictures that would capture the raw & real moments. When we came across Lad and Lass it was a total no brainer for us. We loved their alternative style of taking pictures and when we saw that they did stop motion films we knew that they were for us.

They are a husband & wife team and with them being such amazing, down to earth people were an absolute pleasure to work with . Another added extra was that they put together a fun dancing photo booth of our guests, it brings us so much joy when watching it.

Roxy B: Tell us about the menu.

Roxy A: For starters we had a harvest table with cheese boards including; casera, taleggio, smoked provolone, grand brie, ricotta, fresh fruit, figs and preserves. There was also grilled seasonal vegetables with a selection of smoked and marinated olives, dolmades, taramasalata, hummus, tsatsiki served with a selection of toasted ciabatta and artisanal breads. We also had lime and parsley marinated calamari.

For mains we had a feast style dinner where all the food was put on the guests tables so they could serve and eat as they please. For the meat eaters we had duhkka roasted chicken breasts and slow roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic. For the vegetarians and vegans we had marinated cauliflower steaks with chilli quinoa, sun-dried tomato and butter bean hummus. These were both served with roasted Greek-style lemon potatoes, exotic tomato, quinoa, feta & mint salad, and steamed green beans with olive oil and garlic.

Lastly we had decadent chocolate pots, fresh fruit platters, baklava, pasteis de nata, wedding carrot cake and a selection of sweets and home made cookies.

At midnight we had all of the same food options from our harvest table come out for a midnight snack.

Roxy B: What did you do for a wedding cake?

Roxy A: We had a naked cake, very simple but beautifully filled with raw flowers. It was an absolutely delicious chunky carrot cake with cream cheese icing and there was no cake left by the end of the night!

Roxy B: Is there a particular moment that stands out from the day?

Roxy A: There were so many special moments for us. Walking down the aisle and seeing Dimitri for the first time; being greeted by all of our crazy friends and family screaming for us; our wonderful heart-felt speeches; and of course the greek breaking of the plates was so much fun. I can honestly say that I have never laughed so much or cried so many happy tears in one day, ever!

Roxy B: How did you feel when you saw your husband for the first time walking down the aisle?

Roxy A: This was my favorite part of ourentire wedding. Walking down the aisle to our favorite song (Xavier Rudds, Follow The Sun), outside in the most beautiful setting possible, under a big tree that is hundreds of years old.

I’m sure so many brides wonder how their groom will react, and when I saw Dimitris face everything around me literally fell away and all that I could see was him. I have never felt such love and happiness. It was definitely the highlight of my entire life.
