Valentine & Jimmy See The Light

Jimmy Valentine

It’s no wonder Valentine and Jimmy ended up married. Their creative spirits are a perfect match. Valentine is, as she describes herself, a “Frenchie” who is now a permanent Saffer after living here for about 10 years. She is the General Manager for TRACE South Africa and owns her own jewellery collection, WAL.

While Valentine is making TV and beautiful trinkets, Jimmy is exercising his creative muscles in the world of music and marketing. He is a musician and producer, known as Capso and the co-owner of JV Marketing.

The love story of their wedding day is a modern, etherial classic. And they kindly shared it below.

Wedding Snapshot:

  1. Date: 11th of April 2015
  2. Location: Lanseria, Joburg
  3. Venue: White Light
  4. Number of guests: 120 pax

The White Light Lanseria

Roxy: Why did you pick your wedding venue?

Valentine: We wanted an accessible venue  - not too far away from Johannesburg. We had a few people flying from all over the world to attend our wedding (France, USA, Congo, Australia…) and we didn’t want them to travel further after landing in Johannesburg. We also wanted a simple venue, not too big, not too small… We also wanted to be able to party late and be able to make as much noise as we wanted as there’s no neighbours. I also worked with the forum | the campus on numerous occasion with my previous job and I trust the quality of service.

Roxy: What look and feel were you going for with your décor and overall mood of the wedding?

Our theme was black & white (guests dress code, deco etc…). White light is actually like a white canvas, which is great because you can pretty much do whatever you want with the venue and make it your own.

Wedding Table Decor

Valentine: My husband being born in the DRC and myself being born in France, we decided to name the tables as per cities in France and DRC that had meaning to us and our family (for instance Mbujimayi in DRC is where my husband was born, La Roche sur Yon is where I was born).

Valentine: One of my drawing was also used on the table layout & menus that were printed on the tables. Black & white is timeless & classy…We wont look at our wedding photos in 40 years and say to ourselves “what were we thinking?!”

Roxy: Tell me about picking out your dress? How did you eventually pick “the one”?

Valentine: Phewwww! That wasn’t easy! I went to a couple of stores in Joburg & in France when I was visiting my parents and it ended up in big disappointment every time. I actually realised that I didn’t want a catalogue dress… I’ve always been a big fan of the South African designer Black coffee and decided to set up an appointment with Loret. I picked a dress from their Imprint collection from summer 2013 (which was originally black) so Loret had to source the fabric and tea stained it to match the beige leather that I had sourced from a friend. So it wasn’t the “one” from the start, I had no idea what the finished product was going to look like! A bit risky but I absolutely loved the dress in the end and I can be sure that I will not see the dress on any other bride!

Roxy: And your accessories as well as hair and make-up?

Valentine: I’ve always loved braids since I was a child so I decided to go for a simple braid crown. My hair is very long but I had to buy extensions to make the braids fuller. My husband also really likes when my hair is tied up.

Valentine: After a horrible trial with a “renowed” make up & hair artist, a friend of mine recommended Lindi Bester from Kohl make up academy. She did my hair & make up and was absolutely amazing. I went for quite an unusual look for a bride (dark eyes with eyeline, dark pink lips).

Valentine: I have my own earrings label called WAL and I designed my own earrings for the wedding. I didn’t need anything else…

Roxy: How about your wedding bands?

Valentine: Another customised item! I just wanted a plain silver band to go with my eternity ring and I was struggling to find one… Therefore I had it made as well! (also way cheaper than any jewellery store)

Roxy: What did Jimmy wear?

Valentine: My husband wore a handmade black and white suit (leather lapel & bow-tie). I picked the fabric and leather myself.

Roxy: How did you go about picking your flowers?

Valentine: My bouquet was made out of white peonies wrapped with a black silk ribbon, I actually found out upon receiving the bouquet that they are my mum’s favourite flowers! For the decoration on the tables we had a lot of succulents, fynbos & white proteas.

Roxy: How did you feel when you saw your husband for the first time walking down the aisle?

Valentine: I thought: “this is it…I’m going to marry the love of my life, just breathe and don’t cry you are going to ruin your make up!”
