Talk about turning stereotypes on their heads. Kenzo World’s new perfume commercial goes against the grain and instead of depicting the usual soft, delicate and vulnerable woman they chose to feature a strong, vibrant and kinda kooky Queen. Snaps for Kenzo!
I’m going to toot my own horn here because my knowledge of pop-culture is clearly semi decent. When I watched this Kenzo World perfume commercial I immediately thought to myself that the choreography is remarkably similar to Sia’s recent splurge of videos starring Maddie Ziegler. Another reference that popped into my head was Fatboy Slim’s iconic video for “Weapon of Choice” which starred a mind-blowing dance routine by Christopher Walken.
Director Spike Jonze is known for his quirky sense of storytelling and most notably directed “Being John Malkovich” as well as collaborating with artists such as Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Daft Punk and Björk on some of music’s most visually creative videos.
Sia choreographer Ryan Heffington is responsible for the electric dance moves performed by the star of the commercial, Margaret Qualley. Margaret stars in HBO’s “The Leftovers” and was once upon a time a professional dancer – which you can tell.
Jonze’s brother, Sam Spiegel, is also involved in the project by providing the soundtrack, “Mutant Brain” featuring Assassin.
So here it is in all it’s quirky glory.
In case you need a refresher here is Jonze’s inspiration for the Kenzo World commercial – Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice”. You go Christopher Walken.
