I recently headed to London to interview actress Emilia Clarke for her new role in the film, Me Before You. Most fans of the up-coming film know this, but for those who don’t, before the story became a motion picture it was a critically acclaimed, best selling book.
I am very much a must-read-the-book-before-watching-the-movie kind of person (especially when you have the opportunity to interview the author!) When I met her during the press interviews for the film, I found author Jojo Moyes to be warm, welcoming and open to anything I wanted to ask her.
When I asked her how she felt about her book making it to the big screen she grinned and said, “It’s completely exciting, I can’t be cool about it. I’ve been very bouncy and very nervous. Just uncool about the whole thing!” Watch out for that interview, as well as those with Emilia Clarke and director Thea Sharrock, coming soon to 5FM TV and Top Billing on SABC 3.
I must be up front and honest. I’m not one for a romance novel! So when I first heard about the book I was a skeptic. However, judging a book by it’s cover (see what I did there?!) proved me completely wrong. Me Before You is so much more than a romance. It blurs the lines of it’s genre into comedy and moral fiction – which is a genre that I absolutely love with one my favourite authors being Jodi Picoult.
Questions of love, selflessness, morality and ethics are posed as well as the simple storytelling of two people who shouldn’t have fallen in love but do. What would you do for the person you loved? Would you put them before yourself? Me before you?
Jojo Moyes has artfully, yet simply, made it impossible for you not step into each of the characters shoes and understand their circumstance, their inner conflict and their need for themselves and their partner to live their best life. She has sprinkled a narrative with some serious subject matter with nuances of light heartedness and comedic moments. She walks that fine line artfully.
So for those who still haven’t read the book we have a giveaway for you! Myself and Penguin Books are giving away a Jojo Moyes hamper which includes a copy of Me Before You as well as another title of the acclaimed author’s, One Plus One.
